Intern Insights: Meet Dylan Jones

From oncology research to product strategy, Dylan is discovering how hands-on learning and collaboration can improve outcomes for patients and surgeons

TIME Award

What does it really mean to be an intern at Zimmer Biomet? For our summer interns and co-ops, it is more than a learning experience. It is an opportunity to contribute, collaborate and see firsthand how their work connects to patients around the world.

In our Intern Insights series, we are spotlighting the next generation of talent shaping the future of MedTech.

Next up is Dylan Jones, an Orthopedic MBA candidate at Grace College working with the U.S. Knees team as a Product Management Fellow.

What inspired you to apply for an internship at Zimmer Biomet?

Coming from oncology research, I spent a great deal of time with patients and witnessed both remarkable recoveries and very difficult outcomes. Those experiences made me realize I wanted to contribute to improving quality of life in a different way. As I explored opportunities, Zimmer Biomet’s mission to alleviate pain and improve quality of life for people around the world stood out immediately. The opportunity to combine my clinical background with product strategy and contribute to solutions that help patients and surgeons felt like the ideal fit.

What are you studying and how does this internship connect to your goals?

I earned a bachelor’s degree in Epidemiology from Indiana University Indianapolis and then worked as a Clinical Research Specialist for the IU School of Medicine, supporting oncology trials for two years. After building a strong scientific and clinical foundation, I realized I wanted to better understand the business decisions that bring innovative technologies to patients. I am now pursuing an Orthopedic MBA at Grace College, and this one-year fellowship allows me to apply what I am learning in real time. It is helping me bridge the gap between clinical research and product strategy while developing skills that will allow me to make a broader impact within the orthopedic industry.

Can you describe your role and the team you are working with?

As a Product Management Fellow on the U.S. Knees team, I support initiatives that help our sales teams and surgeons succeed. My projects include monitoring new surgeon retention, tracking and presenting quarterly surgeon metrics, updating competitive selling resources and developing product rationalization tools that help representatives better support surgeons and patient care.

One of the most rewarding parts of the experience has been participating in weekly Sawbones Labs, where I have gained hands-on experience with the Persona Knee System. Working directly with the instruments and implants has strengthened my technical understanding and increased my confidence in communicating product features to others, preparing me to eventually lead product demonstrations.

What has surprised you most about your experience so far?

What surprised me most was seeing how many teams contribute to improving a single surgical procedure. Before starting my fellowship, I mostly thought about the implant itself. Now I have seen how product development, marketing, clinical education, sales, manufacturing and robotics work together to support surgeons and ultimately improve patient care. It has changed the way I think about innovation.

What advice would you give to future interns considering applying?

Be curious and say yes to opportunities outside your role. Some of the experiences that helped me put the puzzle together most quickly came through stretch assignments and opportunities to collaborate with new people. I would also encourage future interns to ask questions and always have a few prepared. Curiosity is one of the fastest ways to learn and grow.

For Dylan, this summer has been an opportunity to connect his clinical research background with the business side of orthopedic innovation. Through hands-on product experience, cross-functional collaboration and data-driven projects, he has gained a deeper appreciation for how thoughtful product strategy can improve the experience of both surgeons and patients. He also believes transparency is essential in healthcare, where trust is earned over time and difficult to rebuild once lost. That combination of curiosity, collaboration and purpose reflects the internship experience at Zimmer Biomet: meaningful work, real impact and continuous growth.
