Sharpening Your Edge 2026: A Surgeon-Directed Learning Experience

Zimmer Biomet’s inaugural immersive bioskills event gave surgeons the flexibility to build a learning path around the sessions, labs and certifications most relevant to their practice.

Las Vegas, Nev. set the stage for a new chapter in orthopedic medical education as Zimmer Biomet hosted its inaugural Sharpening Your Edge event, an immersive, hands-on training experience designed to move beyond traditional learning and deliver immediate, practice-ready impact.

Built for surgeons who want to go further than theory, Sharpening Your Edge created an environment where practical skill development, collaboration and real-world application took center stage. Over two high-impact days, attendees engaged in a personalized learning experience focused on refining technique, strengthening confidence and exploring innovation across multiple specialties.

More than 200 orthopedic surgeons came together with a shared goal: sharpen skills, strengthen practice and ultimately support better patient outcomes.

A Learning Experience Built Around Surgeon Choice

What set Sharpening Your Edge apart was its surgeon-directed format. Instead of following a fixed agenda, attendees could build a curriculum around didactic sessions, immersive BioSkills labs and certification opportunities aligned to their goals, interests and clinical needs.

“We built Sharpening Your Edge by putting physicians in the driver’s seat of the curriculum,” said Dr. John Klibanoff, VP, Global Medical Education and Surgeon Relations at Zimmer Biomet. “That gave attendees the flexibility to focus their time where it mattered most, whether refining a technique, exploring new technologies, deepening expertise in a specific procedure or connecting with leaders in the field. Our goal was for physicians to leave with actionable insights they could put to use right away in daily practice.”

“I heard from a number of surgeons in attendance that they appreciated the ability to choose their own path of education and focus on building the skills that are most relevant to their practice,” said Dr. Hafiz Kassam, Orthopedic Surgeon and Co-chair of the Sharpening Your Edge.

Experience in Action

At the center of the program were high-impact BioSkills labs, where learning came to life. Surgeons worked directly with advanced technologies, refined surgical techniques and applied new approaches in a hands-on environment designed to build confidence and capability.

“Events like Sharpening Your Edge provide a nice mix of hands-on cadaveric, skills-focused courses directly linked surgical tools, techniques and philosophies in the lab setting expert faculty with networking and other opportunities to build connections with others in your field,” said Dr. Atul Kamath, Orthopedic Surgeon and Co-chair of the Sharpening Your Edge.

These experiences were complemented by faculty-led discussions and peer-to-peer exchange, creating a dynamic environment where ideas were challenged, insights were shared and practical takeaways could be brought back to everyday practice.

Rather than observing from the sidelines, participants worked directly with instruments, techniques and technologies relevant to the procedures and decisions they face in practice.

A More Tailored Model for Medical Education

Sharpening Your Edge 2026 reflected a meaningful shift in what surgeons increasingly expect from medical education. Today’s most valuable learning experiences are not passive; they are active, personalized and clinically relevant.

By combining hands-on experience, expert faculty and the freedom to tailor the agenda, the program delivered a model built around choice, relevance and immediate application.
